Thornton Cleveleys 1st XI - 184-8

FULL SCORECARD HERE

Fylde welcomed local rivals Thornton to Moorland Road on a scorching summer's day. Whilst Fylde were missing only Paul Willis from the previous week, Thornton were missing half their team and this was reflected at the toss as Fylde were asked to bat despite losing the toss.

Thornton's fans got settled in their seats to watch some leather chasing, however things did not go according to the script as opener Veitch bowled with great accuracy in the early overs, eventually inducing an edge from substitute opener Dan Candlish. Darren Mckenzie soon followed, driving loosely at a full ball from the other opening bowler to be caught at point for 1. Mike Watkinson went in the same fashion as Candlish to leave Fylde precariously placed at 20-3.

Keith Moore and Dave Crawforth then came together to rebuild the innings, eventually taking the shine off the new ball suffiently for Veitch to be removed from the attack after a fantastic opening spell. This brought the slow bowlers into the game, and runs were soon coming with ease as simple singles were taken, mixed with useful boundaries off the poorer deliveries. The partnership was worth in excess of 100 before Moore was caught in the deep trying to up the tempo of the innings for 54. Crawforth then took over with some excellent strokeplay to seal a first Fylde century, eventually being dismissed for 103. Fylde closed on 225, extras third top scorer with 35.

The Thornton reply began poorly as they soon found themselves two wickets down, with Paul Hague removing dangerman Rob Dingle for a duck before finding the edge of fellow opener Wilson as Watkinson completed a tumbling catch to his right. Thornton then appeared to forget which league they play in and bat for the draw, with lovers of boring, drab cricket the only real winners as the scoreboard meandered along at a snails pace. The game was livened up briefly by two wickets in two balls from Ant Ellison, with the hat-trick ball resulting in an extremely close LBW appeal which was turned down by the umpire, who as a side note had officiated at both ends all game.

Graham Smith seemed comfortable to bat for himself with no attempt to chase down the target, finally completing his hundred in the closing overs before opening up with some big hits as the final score of 184-8 made the run chase look a lot more entertaining than it actually was.

Another very useful victory for Fylde, moving the team up to 6th in the table after an encouraging start to the season.

2ND TEAM REPORT

Fylde 2nd XI - 186-8 (R.Maclaren 35*)
Croston 1st XI - 187-2
FYLDE LOST BY 8 WICKETS

FULL SCORECARD HERE

A depleted second team lost for the third time in three weeks at Croston.

Batting first, all the top order got starts, but wickets fell at regular intervals before captain for the day Robin Maclaren added an unbeaten 35 to the card to give the side something to defend.

Unfortunately, Fylde found Croston's Ian Dickinson in fantastic form as he blazed his was to 111 not out as the target was reached within 28 overs. Joe Mcmillan was the pick of the Fylde bowlers with 1-11 from 8 early overs.

With a full side back next week, a victory is much needed against Freckleton.
